The Good News of Jesus, by Luke

Luke 1

To the Friends of God

1 Since many have taken pen in hand to arrange an orderly account of those things which have taken place among us, 2 Just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and became servants of the word, have delivered them to us; 3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from above, to write for you an orderly account, most excellent Friend of God, 4 So that you may know the certainty of those things, in which you have been instructed.

[
Note: The name 'Theophilus' means 'God's Friend'. But in Scripture no one is mentioned by this name (other than here in Luke 1:3 and Luke's introduction in Acts 1:1). Therefore, I believe Luke uses this name as a metaphor, to address his two letters to every true believer, as to Royalty; because Jesus has made us "Royalty (Basileian) and priests to his God and Father." Revelation 1:6]

John's Birth Announced to Zachariah

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judah, a certain priest named Zachariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. 7 Yet they had no child, because Elisabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in their days.

8 Now it happened, that while he was serving as a priest before God in the order of his division, 9 According to the custom of the priesthood, he was selected by lot to burn incense when he entered into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And a messenger of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zachariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the messenger told him, “Don't be afraid, Zachariah: because your prayer has been heard; and your wife Elisabeth will bear you a son, and you're to call his name John. 14 And you'll be full of cheer and jump for joy; and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 Because he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and will drink neither wine nor strong drink; but he'll be filled with the Holy Spirit, while still in his mother's womb. [Literally, from] 16 And he'll cause many of the sons of Israel to turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he'll go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to revert the hearts of fathers to children, and the unpersuadable to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. (See Malachi 4:6 & Matthew 18:3)

18 And Zachariah said to the messenger, "How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is well advanced in the days of her life."

19 And the messenger answering, told him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you and to announce this Good News to you. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you didn't believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season."

21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were wondering why he was taking so much time in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; because he was making signs to them but remained speechless.

23 Now it happened, that when the days of his public service were completed, he went back to his home. 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and she hid herself for five months, saying, 25 "This is what the Lord's done for me! In these days he has looked favorably upon me, to take away my disgrace among the people."

Christ's Birth Announced to Mary

26 Now in the sixth month the messenger Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, 27 To a virgin who was betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And having come in the messenger told her, "Be of good cheer, highly favored one, the Lord's with you. Blessed are you among women!"

29 And when she saw him, she was alarmed by his statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 But the messenger told her, "Don't be afraid, Mary, because you've found gracious favor before God. 31 And behold, you'll become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you're to call his name JESUS (YAH'shua: GOD-saves). 32 He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David: 33 And he will reign over the house of Jacob throughout eternity; and there will be no end to his kingdom."

34 Then Mary said to the messenger, "How can this be, since I haven't known a man?"

35 And the messenger answered and told her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you: because of this that Holy One who will be born of you will also be called GOD'S SON.

36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth, has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 Because with God nothing that he speaks is impossible."

38 And Mary said, "Behold, I'm the Lord's servant. May it happen to me according to what you have spoken." Then the messenger left her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 And in those days Mary got up and went quickly into the hill country, to a city in Judah, 40 And she entered into the house of Zachariah, and greeted Elisabeth. 41 Now it happened, that when Elisabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in her womb jumped; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit: 42 And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women! And blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For look, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who has believed, because there'll be a fulfillment of the things which were spoken to her by the LORD.”

Mary Magnifies the Lord

46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord! 47 And my spirit jumps for joy in God my Savior! 48 Because he's regarded the lowly state of his servant, and behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. 49 Because he who is mighty has done magnificent things to me; and holy is his name. 50 And his compassion extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He's shown strength with his arm; he's scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He's pulled down the powerful from their thrones, and he's exalted the lowly. 53 He's filled the hungry with good things; and he's sent the rich away empty. 54 He's helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his compassion; 55 As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever."

56 And Mary stayed with her for about three months, and then returned to her own home.

Birth of John the Baptizer

57 Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she bore a son. 58 And her neighbors and relatives rejoiced with her when they heard how the Lord had shown great compassion toward her.

Circumcision of John the Baptizer

59 Now it happened, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zachariah, after the name of his father. 60 But his mother answered and said, “No, he's to be called John.”

61 But they said to her, "There’s no one among your relatives who is called by this name." 62 So they made signs to his father, asking him what he wanted him to be called.

63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, "His name is John." So they all marveled. 64 And instantly his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, and praised God.

65 (And fear came upon all of those who lived around them; and all these things were being talked about throughout all the hill country of Judah. 66 And everyone who heard these things kept them in their hearts, saying, "What kind of child will this be?" And the hand of the Lord was with him.)

Zachariah's Prophecy

67 And his father Zachariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

68 "Adore with praise the Lord God of Israel! Because he's visited us and prepared a ransom for his people. 69 And he's raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70 Just as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from the ages past: 71 That we would be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of everyone who hates us; 72 To perform the compassion promised to our fathers, and in remembrance of his holy covenant; 73 The oath which he swore to our father Abraham, 74 To grant to us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High: because you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77 To give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78 Because of the tender compassion of our God, by which the Sunrise from on high has visited us, 79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace."

80 And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and was in the wilderness until the day he appeared to Israel.

Luke 2

Christ Born of Mary

1 Now it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of all the land. 2 (This census was the first census while Quirinius was governing Syria.) 3 And everyone went to be registered, each to their own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judah, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be registered along with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was pregnant. 6 Now it happened, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 Now there were shepherds in that same region, living outdoors and keeping watch over their flock at night. 9 And behold, the messenger of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 But the messenger told them, "Don't be afraid. I announce Good News to you, that will bring great joy to all people. 11 Because a Savior has been born to you this day in the city of David, who is Christ the Anointed Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a feeding trough."

13 And suddenly there was with the messenger a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward mankind."

15 Now it happened, as the messengers were going away from them into heaven, the men (who were shepherds) said to one another, "Then let's go to Bethlehem, and see this thing which has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 16 So they went quickly and found Mary and Joseph with the baby, who was lying in the feeding trough. 17 And after they had seen him, they made widely known the saying which they had been told concerning this child. 18 Everyone who heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary treasured all these sayings and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

Circumcision of Jesus

21 And when eight days were completed, so that they could circumcise the child, his name was called JESUS (YAH'shua: GOD-saves), the name given by the messenger before he was conceived in the womb.

22 Now when the days of her purification, according to the Law of Moses, were completed; they brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. 23 (As it's written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb will be called holy to the Lord"), 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is stated in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."

Simeon Sees God's Salvation

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and this same man was righteous and devout, waiting for Israel to be called-near to God: and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Anointed. 27 And by the Spirit he came into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, 28 He took him up in his arms, and praised God, and said,

29 "Lord, now you're letting your servant depart in peace, according to what you spoke to me: 30 Because my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 Which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; 32 A light to bring revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel."

33 And Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were being spoken about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and told Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign which will be spoken against, 35 (Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed)."

Anna Bears Witness to the Redeemer

36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And this woman was a widow for about 84 years, she didn't leave the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to the Lord and was speaking about him to everyone who was waiting for the ransom to be paid for Jerusalem.

The Family Returns to Nazareth

39 And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

The Boy Jesus Amazes the Scholars

40 And the child grew and became strong in spirit; he was filled with wisdom, and God's gracious favor was upon him.

41 Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. 42 And when he was 12 years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had completed the days, as they were returning, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother didn’t know it. 44 But they, supposing that he was in the caravan, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their relatives and acquaintances.

45 But when they couldn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. 46 Now it happened, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. 47 And everyone who heard him was astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were astonished. And his mother told him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been filled with sorrow searching for you."

49 But he told them, "Why were you searching for me? Didn't you know that I had to be about my Father's business?" 50 But they didn't understand the statement that he spoke to them.

Jesus Advances in Wisdom and Favor

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them: but his mother treasured all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.

Luke 3

John the Baptizer Prepares the Way

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being the ruler of Judah, and Herod being the ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip the ruler of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the ruler of Abilene, [Literally, tetrarch.] 2 While Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, God's Word came to John the son of Zachariah in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan River, proclaiming a baptism of a change-of-mind for the forgiveness of sins.

Sadly, over the last 2000 years many religious people have added 'their own interpretations' to the Scriptures, to make the Scripture appear to support their Church's Dogmas (such as Jerome did in the 4th Century by translating "metanoeō" into Latin as "do-penance" (to beat yourself with sticks and wipes to show sorrow for sin). But the Greek word "metanoeō" simple means "to-change-your-mind". But this Catholic doctrinal error has been carried over into our English Bibles, because translators continued to use the Catholic terms, "repent and repentance" (which are "direct derivatives" from the Latin word, meaning, "to-do-penance"). But you don't have to beat-yourself-up; like Zacchaeus, the Tax Collector, you can have a joyful change-of-mind! (See Luke 19:1-10, also see Acts 16:25-34)

4 As it's written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, saying, "The voice of one shouting in the wilderness, "Prepare the way of the Lord! Make his paths straight! 5 Every valley will be filled in, and every mountain and hill will be brought low; and the crooked places will be made straight, and the rough paths will be made smooth; 6 And all flesh will see the salvation of God."

John Proclaims God's Message to the People

7 So he told the multitude who came out to be baptized by him, "O generation of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the anger to come? 8 Therefore produce fruits in keeping with a changed-mind, and don't begin to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father:' because I tell you, That God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be cut down, and thrown into the fire!"

10 So the people asked him, saying, "Then what must we do?"

11 He answered and told them, "Whoever has two coats, let them give one to the one who has none; and whoever has food, let them do likewise."

12 Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what must we do?"

13 And he told them, "Exact no more than that which is appointed to you."

14 And the soldiers also asked him, saying, "And what must we do?"

And he told them, "Don't intimidate anyone or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your pay."

15 And as the people were in anticipation, and everyone was wondering in their hearts concerning John, whether or not he might be the Anointed.

16 John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you in water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming; the strap of whose sandals, I'm not worthy to untie. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean out his threshing floor, and he will gather the grain into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

18 And also with many other exhortations he announced Good News to the people.

19 But Herod the ruler, being scolded by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this above them all, that he locked John up in prison. [Literally, tetrarch.]

John Baptizes Jesus

21 Now it happened when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was also baptized. And while he was praying, the heaven was opened; 22 And the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily form like a dove upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, "You are my beloved Son. I am very pleased with you."

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

23 Now Jesus himself began his ministry at about 30 years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 The son of Matthat, the son of Levi,  the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 25 The son of Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 The son of Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, 27 The son of Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 The son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 29 The son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 The son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, 31 The son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 The son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 33 The son of Amminadab, the son of Aram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 The son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 The son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Heber, the son of Shelah, 36 The son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 The son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, 38 The son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Luke 4

Satan Tempts Jesus

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Spirit returned from Jordan River, and was led in the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 Where he was tested by the devil for 40 days. And in those days he ate nothing, and afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.

3 And the devil told him, "If you're God's Son, command this stone to become bread."

4 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It's written, 'A person cannot live on bread alone, but on every word of God.' "

5 Then the devil led him up into a high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil told him, "All this authority I will give to you, and their glory; because it's been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore if you will worship me, everything will be yours."

8 But Jesus answering, told him, "Get behind me, Satan! Because it's written, 'You are to worship the Lord your God, and to serve him alone.' "

9 Then he brought him to Jerusalem, and stood him on the pinnacle of the temple, and told him, "If you're God's Son, throw yourself down from here: 10 Because it's written,

'He will give his messengers charge over you, to protect you.' 11 And 'They'll lift you up in their hands, lest at any time you strike your foot against a stone.' "

12 But Jesus answering, told him, "It's been said, 'You're not to test the Lord your God.' "

13 And having completed all these tests, the devil left him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry

14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit: and news about him spread throughout all the surrounding region. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, receiving praise from everyone.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 Then he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and as was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Day of Rest, and stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. And when he had opened the scroll, he found the place where it's written,

18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he's anointed me to proclaim the Good News to the poor; he's sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."

20 And he rolled up the scroll, and he gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears." 22 And everyone bore him witness, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

23 And he told them, "Surely you'll quote this allegory to me, “'Doctor, heal yourself!' Whatever we've heard that was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well." 24  And he said, "Indeed, I tell you, No prophet is accepted in his own father's land. 25 But I tell you, Indeed many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was great famine throughout all the land; 26 But Elijah wasn't sent to any of them, except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; but none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian."

28 And everyone in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with rage, 29 And rising up they thrust him out of the city; and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down over the cliff. 30 But he walking right through the midst of them, went his way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit

31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the days of Rest. 32 And they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority. 33 Now there was a man in the synagogue who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he shouted with a loud voice, 34 Saying, "Leave us alone! What do we have to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are; the Holy One of God!"

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Shut up, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, he came out of him, and didn't hurt him. 36 And everyone was astonished, and spoke among themselves, saying, "What a word this is! For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." 37 And news about him spread into every place in the surrounding region. [4:35 Literally, be muzzeled.]

Peter's Mother-in-law Healed

38 And he stood up, and went out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was taken with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she got up and served them.

Many Healed After Day of Rest Sunset

40 Now when the sun was setting, everyone who had anyone who was sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You're the Anointed! God's Son!"

But he rebuking them, didn't allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Anointed.

Jesus Proclaims the Good News in Galilee

42 And when it was day, he left there and went to a deserted place: and the people were looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he told them, "I must proclaim the Good News concerning God's Kingdom to other cities as well: because I have been sent for this purpose." 44 And he proclaimed the Good News in the synagogues of Galilee.

Luke 5

Four Fishermen called to be Disciples

1 Now it happened, while he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, the multitude pressed upon him to listen intently to God's Word, 2 And he saw two boats beside the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And stepping into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And sitting down, he began to teach the multitudes from the boat.

4 Now when he had stopped speaking, he told Simon, "Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch."

5 But Simon answering, said to him, "Master, we've worked hard all night, and caught nothing; nevertheless at your word, I'll let down the net."

6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fish, and their net was tearing. 7 So they motioned to their partners, who were in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord; because I'm a sinful man."

9 Because amazement had seized him and all those who were with him at the catch of fish which they had taken: 10 And so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. But Jesus told Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you'll be catching people." 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook everything, and followed him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

12 Now it happened while he was in a certain city, that behold, there was a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and pleaded with him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you could make me clean.” 13 And he reached out his hand and touched him, saying, "I do want to. Be made clean." And instantly the leprosy left him. 14 And he instructed him, "Don't tell anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and bring an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."

15 But the news about him spread all the more, and great multitudes came together to listen intently to him, and to be healed by him of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus himself would often slip away into the wilderness and pray.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic

17 Now it happened on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, and Judah, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And behold, men came carrying a man on a bed, who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and place him before him. 19 But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his bed, into the midst, in front of Jesus.

20 And when he saw their faith, he told him, "Young man, you are forgiven of your sins."

21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this who speaks such blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God alone?"

22 But Jesus knowing their reasoning, answering, told them, "Why are you reasoning such things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, 'You are forgiven of your sins;' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins," he told the paralytic, "I tell you, Get up, and pick up your bed, and go to your house."

25 And immediately he got up before them, and picking up the bed he had been lying on, he went back to his own house, glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen remarkable things today."

Matthew the Tax Collector

27 And after these things he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office: and he told him, "Follow me." 28 And he left everything, got up, and followed him.

29 And Levi made a great banquet for him in his own house: and there was a great multitude of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them to eat. 30 But their scribes and the Pharisees started complaining to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"

31 But Jesus answering, told them, "Those who are healthy have no need of a doctor, but those who are sick do. 32 I haven't come to call the righteous to change their minds, but sinners."

Jesus is Questioned About Fasting

33 And they said to him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but yours eat and drink?”

34 And he told them, "Can you make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they'll fast in those days."

36 And he also spoke an allegory to them; "No one takes a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise the new garment would be torn, and the patch that was taken out of the new garment wouldn't match the old garment. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine would burst the wineskins, and be spilled, and the wineskins would be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be poured into new wineskins; and both are preserved. 39 Also no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new wine: because he says, 'The old is better.' "

Luke 6

Jesus is Lord of the Day of Rest

1 Now it happened on the second Day of Rest after the first, that he went through the grain fields; and his disciples were plucking the heads of grain, and eating them, by rubbing them to pieces in their hands. 2 And some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why are you doing that which isn't lawful to do on the days of Rest?"

3 But Jesus answering, told them, "Haven't you even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 How he went into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those who were with him; which isn't lawful for anyone to eat, except for the priests?" 5 Then he told them, "The Son of Man is also Lord of the Day of Rest." [Or, son of man.]

Jesus Heals on the Day of Rest

6 Now it happened also on another Day of Rest, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, to see if he would heal on the Day of Rest; that they might find an accusation to bring against him. 8 But he knowing their thoughts, told the man who had the withered hand, "Get up, and stand in our midst." And he got up and stood. 9 Then Jesus told them, "I will ask you one thing: is it lawful on the Day of Rest to do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill?" 10 And when he had looked around at them all, he told the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored as healthy as the other. 11 And they were filled with rage, and they were discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus. [6:9 Literally, destroy.]

Jesus Appoints the 12 Apostles

12 Now it happened in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, he called his disciples to him: and he chose 12 of them, whom he also named apostles; 14 Simon, whom he also named Peter (Stone), and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, 16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became a traitor.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude

17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, with a crowd of his disciples, and a large multitude of people out of all Judah and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to listen intently to him, and to be healed of their diseases; 18 As well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits, and they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude was trying to touch him, because power was going out from him, and was healing everyone.

Jesus Pronounces Blessings

20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, "Supremely blessed are you who are poor: because God's Kingdom is yours.

21 Supremely blessed are you who hunger now: because you will be filled. Supremely blessed are you who weep now: because you will laugh.

22 Supremely blessed are you, when people hate you, and when they exclude you from their company, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man.

23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward in heaven is great; for their fathers also did likewise to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 But woe to you who are rich! Because you've already received your consolation.

25 Woe to you who are full! Because you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now! Because you will mourn and weep.

26 Woe to you when all people speak well of you! For their fathers did likewise of the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 But I tell you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 Bless and speak well of those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. 29 Whoever strikes you on the cheek, offer the other to them as well; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And the one who takes away your belongings, don't demand them back from them. 31 And treat others the same way you want them to treat you.

32 But if you only love those who love you, what favor is that to you? Because even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what favor is that to you? Because even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what favor is that to you? Because even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be the sons of the Most High: because he is kind to the unthankful and the evil. 36 Therefore be compassionate, just as your Father also is compassionate.

Don't Judge Others

37 Stop judging, and you will not be judged. Stop condemning, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, will people give into your lap. Because with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."

39 And he spoke an allegory to them, "Can the blind lead the blind? Won't they both fall into the ditch? 40 A disciple isn't above their teacher: but everyone who has been perfectly trained will be like their teacher. 41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but don't notice the log in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? Pretender! First remove the log from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother's eye.

A Tree is Known by it's Fruit

43 For a good tree doesn't produce bad fruit, nor does a bad tree produce good fruit. 44 So each tree is known by its own fruit. For no one gathers figs from a thorn-bush, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble-bush. 45 A good person out of the good treasure of their heart brings forth good things; and an evil person out of the evil treasure of their heart brings forth evil things. Because the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart.

The Wise and Foolish Builder

46 But why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me, and listens to my words and does them, I will show you who they are like: 48 They're like a person building a house, who dug and went down deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood came, the river burst against that house, but it wasn't able to shake it, because it had been founded on the rock. 49 But whoever hears my words, but doesn't do them, is like someone who built a house on the ground, without any foundation, which when the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and the wreckage of that house was great."

 Luke 7

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Slave

1 Now when he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear to him, was sick and about to die. 3 And when he heard about Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to him, pleading with him that he would come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying that the one for whom he should do this was deserving, 5 "Because he loves our nation, and he has built us a synagogue." 6 Then Jesus went with them.

And when he was now not very far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, "Lord, don't trouble yourself: because I'm not worthy that you should enter under my roof: 7 Therefore I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to you. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 Because I also am a man set under authority, having soldiers under me, and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

9 When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned around, and told the people who followed him, "I tell you, Not even in Israel, have I found such great faith." 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.

Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

11 Now it happened the day after that, he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and a great multitude. 12 And when he came near the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow. And a great multitude from the city was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and told her, "Don't weep." 14 Then he came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And he said, "Young man, I tell you, 'Wake up.'" 15 And he who was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

16 Then fear took hold of everyone, and they were glorifying God, saying, "A great prophet has risen up among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 17 And this report about him spread throughout all Judah, and all the surrounding region.

John the Baptizer Sends Messengers to Jesus

18 And John's disciples told him about all these things. 19 Then John, having called two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for someone else?"

20 When the men had come to him, they said, "John Baptizer has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for someone else?'" 21 And in that very hour he healed many from diseases, and torments, and evil spirits, and he granted sight to many who were blind.

22 Then Jesus answering, told them, "Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor. 23 And supremely blessed is the person who finds no cause for stumbling in me."

24 And when John's messengers had gone, he began to speak to the multitudes concerning John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid apparel and live in luxury are in kings courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. 27 This is he, of whom it's written,

'Behold, I’m sending my messenger ahead of you, he will prepare your way before you.'

28 For I tell you, Among those who are born of women there isn't a greater prophet than John the Baptizer: but whoever is least in God's Kingdom is greater than he is."

29 (And when all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God's righteousness, having been baptized with John's baptism. 30 But the Pharisees and experts in the Law rejected God's counsel for themselves, because they had not been baptized by him.)

31 And the Lord said, "To whom then can I compare the people of this generation? And what are they like? 32 They're like children sitting in the marketplace, and calling out to one another, and saying,

'We played the flute for you, but you didn't dance; we sang a mournful song to you, but you didn't weep.'

33 For John the Baptizer came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you said, 'He has a demon!' 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking; and you say, 'Look, he's a glutton, and a wino! A friend of tax collectors and sinners!' 35 But wisdom is shown to be right by all her children."

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 Then one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him. And entering into the Pharisee's house, he reclined to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus was dining in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of perfumed oil, 38 And she stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears, and to wipe them with the hairs of her head, and she kissed his feet and anointed them with the perfumed oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he spoke within himself, saying, "This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what sort of woman this is who touches him: because she is a sinner."

40 But Jesus answering, told him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he said, "Teacher, say it."

41 "There was a certain creditor who had two debtors: one owed 500 denarii, and the other 50. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay him, he freely forgave them both. So, tell me, which of them will love him more?"

[6:41 A denarii was equal to a day's wages.]

43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more."

And he told him, "You have judged rightly."

44 Then he turned to the woman, and told Simon, "Do you see this woman? When I entered into your house, you gave me no water for my feet: but she has washed my feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 You didn't give me a kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hasn't ceased kissing my feet. 46 You didn't anoint my head with oil: but this woman has anointed my feet with perfumed oil. 47 Therefore I tell you, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; because she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little."

48 Then he told her, "Your sins are forgiven."

49 And those who were reclining with him at the dinner began to say within themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"

50 Then he told the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

Luke 8

Many Women Minister to Jesus

1 Now it happened after that, that he was traveling through every city and village, proclaiming and announcing the Good News about God's Kingdom: and the 12 were with him, 2 And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses; Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had gone seven demons, 3 And Joanna, the wife of Herod's household manager Chuza; Susanna; and many others who supported him out of their resources.

The Allegory of the Sower

4 And a great multitude came together, they came to him from every city, and he spoke to them by an allegory: 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and were trampled underfoot, and the birds of the heavens devoured it. 6 And some fell on rocky ground; and as soon as it sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorn-bushes; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And some fell into good soil, and having sprung up produced a crop, 100 times as much." As he said these things, he called out, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them listen intently!"

The Purpose of Allegories

9 And his disciples asked him, saying, "What does this allegory mean?"

10 And he said, "To you it's been given to know the secret things of God's Kingdom: but to the rest I speak in allegories, that,

'Seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.'

The Allegory of the Shower Explained

11 Now the allegory is this: The seed is God's Word. 12 Those along the path are those who hear, then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they won't believe and be saved. 13 And those on the rocky ground are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a little while, but in a time of testing fall away. 14 And those which fell among the thorn-bushes, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and their fruit doesn't mature. 15 But those on the good soil are those, who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, observe it, and bring forth fruit with perseverance.

The Allegory of the Revealed Light

16 No one lights a lamp and covers it with a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Rather they set it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see by the light. 17 Because nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing is hidden that won't be made known and brought to light. 18 So listen intently: because whoever has, will be given more; but whoever doesn't have, even what they think they have will be taken from them."

Jesus' Mother and Brothers Come to Him

19 Then his mother and brothers and sisters came to him, but they weren't able to meet with him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to him, saying, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are standing outside, wanting to see you."

21 But he answering, told them, "My mother and my brothers and sisters are those who listen intently to God's Word and do it."

The Wind and Waves Obey Jesus

22 Now it happened on a certain day, that he got into a boat with his disciples. And he told them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the sea." And they launched out. 23 But as they sailed, he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're perishing!"

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and became calm. 25 But he said to them, "Where is your faith?"

And being afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, "Who then is this? That he even commands the winds and the water, and they obediently listen to him."

A Demon-Possessed Man Delivered

26 And they sailed to the region of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when he got out on the land, a certain man met him from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he dwell in a house, but among the tombs. 28 And when he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice he said, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" 29 (Because he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him: and he was kept bound with chains and in shackles; but he broke the bands, and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.)

30 Then Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?"

And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered into him. 31 And he pleaded with him that he would not command them to go out into the abyss.

32 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding there on the mountain: and they pleaded with him that he would permit them to enter into them. And he permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man, and entered into the pigs: and the herd ran violently down a steep cliff into the lake, and drown.

34 When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and they went and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the demons had gone, sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. 36 Those also who saw it, told them by what means he who had been demon possessed was healed. 37 Then the whole multitude from the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked him to go away from them, because they were gripped with great fear. And he got into the boat and returned.

38 Now the man out of whom the demons had gone pleaded with him that he might remain with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 "Return to your home, and declare what great things God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all the things that Jesus had done for him..

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

40 Now it happened when Jesus had returned, that the multitude welcomed him, because they were all waiting for him. 41 And behold, there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and pleaded with him that he would come into his house: 42 Because his daughter was his only child, she was about 12 years old, and she was dying.

But as he went the people thronged him. 43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for 12 years, and she had spent all her living on doctors, but she couldn't be healed by any. 44 She came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment: and instantly her discharge of blood stopped.

45 And Jesus said, "Who touched me?"

When everyone denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes are thronging and press in on you, and you say, 'Who touched me?' "

46 But Jesus said, "Somebody touched me, because I know that power has gone out from me." 47 And when the woman saw that she wasn't hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared to him before all the people for what reason she had touched him, and how she was healed instantly.

48 And he told her, "Daughter, have courage. Your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

49 While he was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, "Your daughter has died. Don't trouble the Teacher."

50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, "Don't be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well." 51 And when he came into the house, he allowed no one to go in, except Peter and James and John, and the father and the mother of the girl. 52 And everyone was weeping and mourning for her; but he said, "Don't weep; she isn't dead, but sleeping." 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called out, saying, "Child, get up." 55 And her spirit came again, and she immediately got up: and he commanded that she be given something to eat. 56 And her parents were astonished: but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

Luke 9

Jesus Sends Out the 12

1 And having called his 12 disciples, he gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them out to proclaim God's Kingdom, and to heal the sick. 3 And he told them, "Take nothing for your journey, neither walking sticks, nor provision bag, nor bread, nor money; nor have two shirts apiece.

4 And whatever house you may enter, stay there, and from there go out. 5 And as many as will not receive you, when you go out from that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them."

6 And they went out, and went through the towns proclaiming the Good News, and healing everywhere.

Herod Seeks to See Jesus

7 Now Herod the governor heard about all that were done by him: and he was perplexed, because it was said by some, that John had risen from the dead; 8 And by others that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had risen. 9 And Herod said, "John I have beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see him.

Feeding the 5,000

10 And the apostles, when they had returned, told him all that they had done. Then he took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 And the multitude, when they knew it, followed him: and he welcomed them, and spoke to them about God's Kingdom, and he healed those who needed healing. 12 When the day began to decline, the 12 came and said to him, "Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and region, and find lodging and get provisions; because we are in a deserted place here."

13 But he told them, "You can give them something to eat."

And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people." 14 Because they were about 5,000 men.

And he told his disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of fifties." 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 So they all ate and were filled, and 12 baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 Now it happened as he was alone praying, and his disciples were with him: he asked them, saying, "Who do the multitudes say that I am?"

19 And they answered and said, "John the Baptizer, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the ancient prophets has risen."

20 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Peter answering said, "The Christ God's Anointed."

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

21 And he warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone; 22 Saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day."

Take Up the Cross and Follow Him

23 And he told them all, "If anyone wants to come after me, let them deny themself, and take up their cross daily, and follow me. 24 Because whoever wants to save their life will lose it: but whoever loses their life on account of me, the same will save it. 25 Because what will it benefit a person if they gain the whole world, but destroy themself or are lost? 26 Because if anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and the holy messengers. 27 But I tell you truly, There are some standing here, who will not taste of death, until they see God's Kingdom."

Jesus Transfigured on the Mount

28 Now it happened about eight days after these sayings, that he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. 29 And it happened as he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as white as a flash of lightning. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 Who appeared in glory and spoke about his departure which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. 32 But Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep; but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him. 33 Now it happened, as they were leaving him, that Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it's good for us to be here; and let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah," not knowing what he was saying.

34 While he was saying these things, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. 35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and in those days they didn't tell anyone about the things which they had seen.

A Boy is Healed

37 Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met him. 38 And behold, a man from the multitude called out, saying, "Teacher, I plead with you, look upon my son: because he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and it leaves him with great difficulty, bruising him. 40 And I pleaded with your disciples to cast him out; but they couldn't."

41 And Jesus answering said, "O unbelieving and corrupt generation! How much longer must I be with you, and put up with you? Bring your son here." 42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Jesus Again Predicts His Death

43 And everyone marveled at the magnificence of God.

But while they marveled at all the things which Jesus did, he told his disciples, 44 "Let these words sink down into your ears: because the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into human hands." 45 But they didn't understand this saying, and it was concealed from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Who is the Greatest?

46 Then an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child and set him beside him, 48 And told them, "Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. Because whoever is least among you all will be great."

Jesus Forbids Sectarianism

49 And John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he doesn't follow with us."

50 But Jesus told him, "Don't stop him. Because whoever isn't against us is for us."

A Samaritan Village Rejects the Savior

51 Now it happened, when the days were almost fulfilled for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers before his face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, so that they might prepare for him. 53 But they wouldn't receive him, because his face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven and consume them, even as Elijah did?"

55 But turning, he scolded them, and said, "You don't know of what sort of spirit you are of. 56 Because the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy people's lives but to save them." And they went to another village.

The Cost of Discipleship

57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone told him, "Lord, I will follow you wherever you go."

58 And Jesus told him, "Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has not where to lay his head."

59 And he said to another, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."

60 But Jesus told him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you're to go and proclaim God's Kingdom."

61 And another also said, "Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say goodbye to those who are in my house."

62 But Jesus told him, "No one, having put his hand on the plow, and looking back, is fit for God's Kingdom."

Luke 10

The 70 Sent Out

1 Now after these things the Lord also appointed 70 others, and he sent them out two by two ahead of him, into every city and place where he himself was about to come. 2 Therefore he told them, "The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest. 3 Go! Behold, I'm sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Don't carry a money bag, nor provision bag, nor sandals: and greet no one along the road. 5 And into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace upon this house.' 6 And if the son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon it; but if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in that same house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, because the worker is worthy of his wages. Don't move from house to house. 8 And into whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat whatever is set before you: 9 And heal the sick there, and tell them, 'God's Kingdom has come near to you.' 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its open square and say, 11 'The very dust from your city which clings to us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that God's Kingdom has come near to you.' 12 But I tell you, that it will be more tolerable on the Day of judgment for Sodom, than for that city.

Wow to the Impenitent Cities

13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because if the powerful works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have changed their minds long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the Judgment, than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades. 16 Whoever hears you hears me; and whoever despises you despises me; and whoever despises me despises him who sent me."

The 70 Return

17 And the 70 returned again with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us through your name."

18 And he told them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I give you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing will by any means harm you. 20 Nevertheless don't rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names have been written in heaven."

Jesus Rejoices in the Spirit

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit, and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in your sight." 22 And turning to the disciples he said, "All things have been delivered to me by my Father: and no one knows who the Son is, except the Father; and who the Father is, except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wants to reveal him."

23 And having turned to the disciples he privately said, "Supremely blessed are the eyes which see what you see: 24 Because I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

The Allegory of the Good Samaritan

25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?"

27 And he answering said, "'You're to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind;' and, ‘your neighbor as yourself.' "

28 And he told him, "You've answered rightly. Do this, and you will live."

29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30 And Jesus answering said, "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothes, and wounded him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance a certain priest was coming down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he came to that place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion, 34 And coming to him, he bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And the next day, when he was leaving, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the innkeeper, and told him, 'Take care of him; and whatever you spend in addition, when I come back, I will repay you.' 36 So which of these three do you think was a neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?"

37 And he said, "The one who had compassion on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

Mary Listens While Martha Serves

38 Now it happened as they traveled, that he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and was listening intently to his word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came to him and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."

41 But Jesus answered and told her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. 42 But only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her."

Luke 11

How We Are to Pray

1 Now it happened that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

2 And he told them, "When you pray, say, 'Our Father in heaven, May your name be honored as holy. May your kingdom come. May your will be done on earth, as it is done in heaven.

3 Give us our necessary bread for today.

4 And forgive us of our sins, because we also forgive everyone who owes us. And let us not be brought into a time of testing, but deliver us from the evil one.' "

A Friend Comes at Midnight

5 And he told them, "Suppose one of you had a friend, and you went to him at midnight and said to him, 'Friend, let me borrow three loaves of bread. 6 Because a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; 7 And suppose the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' 8 I tell you, even though he won't get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking

9 So I tell you: Keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you; 10 Because everyone who keeps asking will receive, and the one who keeps searching will find, and the one who keeps knocking will have the door opened.

11 And what father among you, if his son asked for bread, would give him a stone? Or if he asked for a fish, would give him a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asked for an egg, would give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children: how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"

A House Divided Cannot Stand

14 And he was casting out a demon, and it was mute. Now it happened, when the demon had gone out, the mute spoke; and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebub, the chief of the demons!"

16 And others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, told them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against itself falls. 18 If Satan is also divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub. 19 But if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, then God's Kingdom has come to you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are in peace. 22 But when one stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his plunder. 23 Whoever isn't with me is against me, and whoever doesn't gather with me scatters.

An Unclean Spirit Returns

24 When an unclean spirit goes out of a person, he goes through waterless places, seeking rest; and not finding any, he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came out.' 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and brings with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they come and dwell there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first."

Keep Focused on the Word

27 Now it happened, while he spoke these things, that a certain woman from the multitude raised her voice and said to him, "Supremely blessed is the womb which bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!"

28 But he said, "More than that, supremely blessed are those who listen intently to God's Word and keep focused on it."

Seeking a Sign

29 And when the multitudes gathered thickly together, he began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 30 Because as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south will rise up in the Judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: because she came from the utmost parts of the earth to listen intently to the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, one greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: because they changed their minds at the proclamation of Jonah; and, behold, one greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

33 No one, having lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see by the light. 34 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light."

Wow to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. And having entered, he reclined to eat. 38 And the Pharisee was astonished to see that he didn't first wash before dinner.

39 And the Lord told him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but on the inside you are full of greed and evil. 40 Fools! Didn't he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give compassionately from within; then, behold, everything will be clean for you.

42 But woe to you, Pharisees! Because you tithe a tenth of mint and rue and every vegetable; but you pass over justice and the love of God. These things you should have done, and not dismissed the others. 43 Woe to you, Pharisees! Because you love the first seats in the synagogues and greetings in the market places. 44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders! Because you are like unmarked graves, and the people who walk over them do not know it."

45 Then one of the experts in the Law answered and said to him, "Teacher, by saying these things you insult us also."

46 And he said, "Woe to you experts in the Law also! Because you load people down with burdens hard to carry, yet you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you! Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your fathers did: because they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also says, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and others persecute:' 50 So that the blood of all the prophets which has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Indeed! I tell you, It will be required of this generation.

52 Woe to you experts in the Law! Because you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves didn't enter in, and those who were entering in you hindered."

53 And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him fiercely, and to interrogate him about many things: 54 Laying in wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

Luke 12

Beware of Hypocrisy

1 In the mean time, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered, so that they were stepping on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 But there's nothing covered up, that will not be revealed; nor hidden, that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have spoken in darkness will be heard in the light; and that which you have spoken in the ear behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.

Jesus Teaches the Fear of God

4 But my friends, I tell you, Don't be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will show you clearly whom you should fear: Fear him who after he kills, has authority to throw you into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

6 Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don't be afraid: because you are more valuable than many sparrows.

8 Also I tell you, Whoever acknowledges me before people, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before God's messengers. 9 But whoever denies me before people will be denied before God's messengers.

10 And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven them. But anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, will not be forgiven.

11 And whenever they bring you before assemblies and rulers and authorities, don't worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say: 12 Because the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you should say."

The Allegory of the Rich Fool

13 Then someone from the multitude said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

14 But he told him, "Man, who appoint me a judge or an divider over you?" 15 Then he told them, "Watch out and be on your guard against covetousness, because a person's life does not consist in the abundance of their possessions."

16 Then he spoke an allegory to them, saying, "The land of a certain rich man produced abundantly: 17 And was reasoning within himself, saying, 'What should I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' 18 Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my crops and goods. 19 And I'll say to my soul, "Soul, you've stored up plenty of good things for many years. Take it easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself." ' 20 But God told him, 'Fool! This very night your soul will be demanded back from you: then whose will those things be, which you have provided?'

21 That's how it will be with the one who stores up treasure for themself, but is not rich toward God."

Do Not Worry

22 Then he told is disciples, "Therefore I tell you, Don't worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will wear. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, because they neither sow nor harvest, which have neither storeroom nor barn; and yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 Therefore if you cannot do a very small thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider how the lilies grow. They neither work hard nor spin yarn, yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his splendor was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the garden in the feild, which today is in the field, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith? [12:25 Roughly, 18 inches.]

29 And you shouldn't seek what you may eat or what you may drink, and don't be anxious. 30 Because all the nations of the world seek after these things, but your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But rather seek God's Kingdom; and all these things will be added to you.

32 Don't be afraid, little flock; because it pleases your Father to give you the Kingdom. 33 Sell what you have, and give compassionately to the poor; make money bags for yourselves which do not grow old, a treasure in heaven which will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Faithful and Evil Servant

35 Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; 36 And you yourselves be like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 Supremely blessed are those servants whom their master, when he comes, will find watching. Indeed, I tell you, He will gird himself and have them recline to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he comes in the second watch, or comes in the third watch, and finds them so doing, supremely blessed are those servants.

39 But know this, If the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would have kept watch, and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40 Therefore you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

41 Then Peter said to him, "Lord, are you speaking this allegory to us, or also to everyone?"

42 And the Lord said, "Who then is that faithful and wise manager, whom their master will place over his household, to give them their portion of grain at the proper time? 43 Supremely blessed is that servant, whom when his master comes will find them so doing. 44 Truly, I tell you, He will place them over all his possessions.

45 But if that servant says in his heart, 'My master is delaying his coming,' and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 The master of that servant will come on a day which they do not expect him, and at an hour which they do not know, and he will cut them with a whip and appoint them their portion with the unbelievers.

47 And that servant who knew his master's will, and didn't get ready or do according to his will, will be beaten with many lashes. 48 But the one who didn't know, yet committed things deserving of lashes, will be beaten with few. And to everyone to whom much was entrusted, from them much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of them they will ask the more.

Christ Brings Division

49 I have come to throw fire into the earth, and how I wish it were already burning. 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished. 51 Do you think I have come to bring peace on earth? No indeed, I tell you, but rather disunity. 52 Because from now on there will be five in one household divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 The father will be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

Discern the Time

54 And he also told the multitudes, "When you see a cloud rising from the west, you say at once, 'A thunder storm is coming,' and so it happens. 55 And when the south wind is blowing, you say, 'It's going to be a scorcher!' and it happens. 56 Pretenders! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky and the earth, but why do you not discern this present time?

Make Peace with Your Adversary

57 And why do you not also judge for yourselves what is right? 58 For example, when you go with your opponent in front of a magistrate, try diligently to be reconciled with them on the way there; so that they won't drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to an officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, by no means will you get out of there, until you have paid the very last penny."

Luke 13

Change Your Mind or Perish

1 And there were some present at that same time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answered and told them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? 3 No indeed, I tell you; but unless you change your minds you all will likewise perish. 4 Or those 18, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; do you think that these were worse offenders than all the people who dwell in Jerusalem? 5 No indeed, I tell you; but if you don't change your minds you all will likewise perish."

6 He also spoke this allegory: "A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 Then he told the worker of his vineyard, 'Look, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and I haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it even deplete the soil?' 8 But he answering said to him, 'Sir, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it and throw in manure to fertilize it. 9 Then if it indeed produces fruit in the coming year, good. But if not, you can cut it down.' "

A Sprint of Infirmity

10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the days of Rest. 11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity 18 years, and she was bent over and wasn't able to straighten herself up completely. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and told her, "Lady, you're released from your infirmity." 13 And he laid his hands on her: and instantly she was made straight, and she glorified God.

14 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Day of Rest, and he told the multitude, "There are six days in which one should work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Day of Rest."

15 The Lord then answered him, and said, "You pretender! Doesn't each of you on the Day of Rest untie your ox or donkey from the feeding trough on the Day of Rest and lead it away to water? 16 So shouldn't this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, these 18 years! be released from this bondage on the Day of Rest?" 17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced because of all the wonderful things he had done. [Note: Jesus blamed Satan for this woman's infirmity. See Acts 10:38]

The Allegory of the Mustard Seed

18 Then he said, "What is God's Kingdom like? And to what can I compare it? 19 It's like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches."

The Allegory of the Leaven

20 And again he said, "To what can I compare God's Kingdom? 21 It's like yeast which a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour, until it all was leavened."

The Narrow Way

22 And he was going through cities and villages teaching, as he made his way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?" And he told them,

24 "Strive to enter through the narrow gate. Because many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able to; 25 When once the master of the house has gotten up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us.' And he will answer and tell you, 'I don't know where you're from.' 26 Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you have taught in our streets.' 27 But he will say, 'I tell you, I don't know you, nor where are you from. Get away from me, all you workers of iniquity!' 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in God's Kingdom, and you yourselves thrown out. 29 And they will come from the east, and the west, and from the north, and the south, and will sit down in God's Kingdom. 30 And behold, some who are last will be first, and some who were first will be last.”

31 The same day some Pharisees came and told him, “Go away and leave this place, because Herod wants to kill you!"

32 And he told them, "Go, and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons, and perform complete healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will accomplish my purpose.' 33 Nevertheless I must travel on today, tomorrow, and the next day; because it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

Jesus Laments over Jerusalem

34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to you; how often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate! And indeed, I tell you, You will not see me again, until the time comes when you says, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "

Luke 14

A Man with Edema Healed on the Day of Rest

1 Now it happened, when he came into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to eat bread on a Day of Rest, that they were watching him closely. 2 And behold, there was a certain man before him who had edema (extreme swelling). 3 And Jesus answering spoke to the experts in the Law and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Day of Rest?"

4 But they were silent. And taking hold of him, he healed him, and let him go. 5 Then he answered them, saying, "Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit on the Day of Rest, will not immediately pull him out?" 6 And they weren't able to answer him concerning these things.

Take the Lowly Place

7 And he spoke an allegory to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the first seats for themselves, telling them, 8 "When you're invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't sit down in the first seats, lest someone more distinguished than you has been invited by him; 9 And he who invited both of you comes and says to you, 'Give your place to this person,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you're invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may tell you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11 Because everyone who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

12 Then he also said to the one who had invited him, "When you prepare a breakfast or a dinner; don't invite your friends, or your brothers and sisters, or your relatives, or your rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But whenever you prepare a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 And you will be supremely blessed; because they don’t have the resources to repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

The Allegory of the Great Banquet

15 Now when one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, "Supremely blessed is the one who will eat bread in God's Kingdom."

16 Then he told him, "A certain man prepared a great banquet, and he invited many, 17 And at dinner time sent his servant to tell those who were invited, 'Come; because everything is ready now.' 18 And they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first told him, 'I've bought a piece of land, and I must go and see it. I ask you, have me excused.' 19 And another said, 'I've bought five team of oxen, and I'm going to test them. I ask you, have me excused.' 20 And another said, 'I've married a wife, and therefore I can’t come.' 21 So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, told his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind.' 22 And the servant said, 'Master, it's done as you have commanded, and there's still room.' 23 And the master told the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.' 24 Because I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste of my dinner.' "

To Follow Jesus Requires Complete Commitment

25 And great multitudes were traveling with him. And turning, he told them, 26 "If anyone comes to me, and doesn't hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, they cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever doesn't take up their cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and count the cost, to see whether they have enough to finish it? 29 Lest perhaps, after they have laid the foundation, they aren't able to finish it, and everyone who see it begin to ridicule them, 30 Saying, 'This person began to build, and wasn't able to finish.' 31 Or what king, going to engage another king in battle, doesn't first sit down and take counsel, whether he's able with 10,000 to meet him who comes against him with 20,000? 32 But if he isn’t, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks the terms for peace. 33 So likewise, every one of you who doesn't forsake all their possessions cannot be my disciple.

[Note: Sadly, these verses aren't taught in most Churches today. And as a result many people believe they are saved, just because they prayed "The Sinners Prayer." But Romans 10:9 says, "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus as Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." So if Jesus isn't LORD of everything in your life, He's not really your Lord at all! For Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the Kingdom of the heavens; but the one who does the will of my Father who is in the heavens. Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name? And in your name cast out demons? And in your name do many wonderful works?' But then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness!' (Matthew 7:21-23) Therefore, Paul said, "Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Don't you yourselves realize, that Jesus Christ is in you? Unless indeed you are disqualified." 2 Corinthians 13:5]

Tasteless Salt is Worthless

34 Salt is good; but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35 It's neither fit for the soil nor for the manure pile, but they throw it out. Whoever has ears to hear, let them listen intently."

Luke 15

The Allegory of the Lost Sheep

1 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to him to listen intently to him. 2 But the Pharisees and the scribes kept complaining, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." 3 So he spoke this allegory to them, saying,

4 "What man among you, having 100 sheep, if he loses one of them, doesn't leave the 99 in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, telling them, 'Rejoice with me; because I've found my sheep which was lost.' 7 I tell you, that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who changes their mind, than over 99 righteous people who do not need to change their mind.

The Allegory of the Lost Coin

8 Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, doesn't light a lamp, and sweep the house, and search diligently until she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, 'Rejoice with me; because I've found the coin which I had lost.' 10 Likewise, I tell you, there is more joy in the presence of God's messengers over one sinner who changes their mind."

Allegory of the Lost Son

11 And he said, "A certain man had two sons: 12 The younger of them told his father, 'Father, give me the share of the estate that falls to me.' So he divided his livelihood between them. 13 And not many days after that the younger son gathered everything together, and took his journey into a far country, and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 But when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred throughout that country, and he began to be in need. 15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he was longing to fill his stomach with the carob pods which the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have an abundance of bread, but I'm perishing with hunger. 18 I'll get up and go to my father, and tell him, 'Father, I've sinned against heaven, and in your sight, 19 And I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.'

20 And he got up, and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and he ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son told him, 'Father, I've sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.'

22 But the father told his servants, 'Bring out the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet: 23 And bring the fattened calf here and slaughter it; and let's eat and celebrate! 24 Because my son was dead, and he's alive again. He was lost, and now he's found.' And they began to celebrate.

25 Now his older son was in the field: and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of his servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he told him, 'Your brother has come home; and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf, because he's received him safe and sound.'

28 And he was angry, and wouldn't go in: So his father came out, and began pleading with him. 29 And he answering told his father, 'Look, I've served you for many years, and I've never disobeyed your command. Yet you never gave me a young goat, so that I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.'

31 And he told him, 'Son, you're always with me, and everything that I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead, and he's alive again; he was lost, and he's found.' "

Luke 16

The Allegory of the Unjust Manager

1 And he also told his disciples: "There was a certain rich man who had a manager, and it was reported to him that this manager was squandering his possessions. 2 And calling him, he said to him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.'

3 Then the manager said within himself, 'What am I going to do? Because my boss is taking the manager position away from me: I'm not strong enough to dig; and I'm too ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I'll do, so that when I'm removed from the manager position, they may receive me into their homes.' [16:3 Literally, "lord" or "master".]

5 So he called all of his boss's debtors to him, and said to the first, 'How much do you owe my boss?' 6 And he said, 'A hundred measures of oil.' And he told him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly, and write 50.' 7 Then he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' And he said, 'A hundred measures of wheat.' And he told him, 'Take your bill, and write 80.' 8 And the boss applauded the unjust manager, because he'd acted shrewdly: because the sons of this age in their generation are shrewder than the sons of light.

9 So I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth: so that when you fail, they will welcome you into everlasting homes. 10 Whoever is faithful in that which is least, is also faithful in much: and whoever is unjust in the least, is also unjust in much. 11 Therefore if you haven't been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you haven't been faithful in that which belongs to another, who will give you that which is your own?

13 No servant can serve two masters: because either they'll hate the one, and love the other; or else they'll be loyal to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." [Or, lords.]

The Law, the Prophets, and the Kingdom

14 Now the Pharisees, who love money, had been listening to all this and began to ridicule Jesus. 15 And he told them, "You're those who justify yourselves before people; but God knows your hearts. For that which is highly esteemed among people is detestable in God's sight.

16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the Good News about God's Kingdom is proclaimed, and everyone is forcing their way into it.

17 But it's easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one dot of the law to fail. 18 Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and everyone who marries a woman who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and who lived each day in joyous splendor. 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And he longed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. And even the dogs came and would lick his sores. 22 Now it happened, that the beggar died, and was carried by the heavenly messengers into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have compassion on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; because I'm suffering in this flame.' 25 But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things, but here he is comforted and you are suffering. 26 And besides all this, a great gulf has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot, nor can those from there cross over to us.'

27 Then he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you would send him to my father's house: 28 Because I have five brothers; that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' 29 Abraham told him, 'They have Moses and the Prophets. They should listen intently to them.' 30 And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if someone from the dead went to them, they would change their minds.' 31 But he told him, 'If they will not listen intently to Moses and the Prophets, they won't be persuaded even if someone were to rise from the dead.' "

Luke 17

Jesus Warns of Offenses

1 Then he told the disciples, "It's impossible for offenses not to come; but woe to the person through whom they come. 2 It would be better for them if a donkey's millstone were hung around their neck, and they were thrown into the sea, than that they should ensnare one of these little ones. 3 Watch out for yourselves. If your brother or sister sins against you, scold them; and if they change their mind, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you 7 times in a day and 7 times in that day come back to you, saying, 'I changed my mind, I'm sorry,' you must forgive them."

Faith and Duty

5 And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." 6 And the Lord said, "If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be plucked up by the root, and be planted in the sea;' and it would obediently listen to you.

7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will tell him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and sit down to eat?' 8 Rather will he not tell him, 'Prepare something for me to eat, and gird yourself and serve me until I have eaten and drunk, and after that you may eat and drink'? 9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you've done everything which you are commanded to do, say, 'We're useless servants; because we've only done that which was our duty to do.' "

Ten Lepers Cleansed

11 Now it happened, while he was traveling to Jerusalem that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he was entering into a certain village, ten leprous men met him, who stood at a distance. 13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, "Jesus, Master, have compassion on us!"

14 And when he saw them, he told them, "Go show yourselves to the priests." Now it happened, that as they went, they were cleansed.

15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God; 16 And he fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

17 And Jesus answering said, "Weren't the ten cleansed? But where are the other nine? 18 Was no one found who turned back to give glory to God, except this foreigner?" 19 And he told him, "Get up, go home. Your faith has saved you."

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 And when he was asked by the Pharisees, when God's Kingdom would come, he answered them and said, "The coming of God's Kingdom isn't something that can be observed: 21 Neither will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'Look, there it is!' For behold, God's Kingdom is within you!"

22 Then he told the disciples, "The days will come, when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you won't see it. 23 And when they tell you, 'Look, he's here!' or 'Look, he's there!' Don't go out or run after them. 24 Because just as the lightning shines brightly, flashing from one end of the sky to the other end of the sky; so also will the Son of Man be in his day. 25 But first he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation.

26 And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise also as it happened in the days of Lot; they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; 29 But on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and burning sulfur from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30 It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

31 On that day, whoever is on the housetop, and their belongings is in the house, must not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back for the things they left behind. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save their life will lose it; and whoever loses their life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken, and the other will be left. 35 Two will be grinding together; the one will be taken, and the other left."

36 "Two will be in the field; the one will be taken, and the other left."

37 And they answered and said to him, "Where, Lord?"

And he told them, "Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together."

[Note on verses 26-37. In verses 26-30, Jesus says, "Just as it happened in the days of Noah... and Lot... it will be just the same on the day the Son of Man is revealed." In these verses the wicked were "taken away" in judgment. So Jesus isn't talking about a secret rapture of the righteous, but about the judgment of the wicked; as Jude says, "Behold, the Lord comes with 10,000 of his holy ones, to execute judgment upon all..." (Jude 1:14-15) "The holy ones" are "the eagles" in verse 37.]

Luke 18

How We Need To Pray Regarding Jesus' Second Coming

1 But he also spoke an allegory to them concerning how people always need to pray and not become discouraged: 2 Saying, "There was a certain judge in a certain city who didn't fear God and didn't regard people. 3 And there was a widow in that city, who kept coming to him, saying, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' 4 And he didn't want to for a time; but afterward he said within himself, 'Although I don't fear God, nor regard people, 5 Yet because this widow keeps troubling me, I will grant her justice. Otherwise, she will keep coming and wear me out.' "

6 Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said. 7 And will not God grant justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he delay to help them? 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

The Allegory of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9 But he spoke this allegory to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and looked down on everyone else: 10 "Two people went up to the temple to pray; one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed these things to himself, 'God, I thank you, that I'm not like other people, greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I possess.' 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not so much as lift his eyes towards heaven, but beat on his chest, saying, 'God, be compassionate to me a sinner.' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts themself will be humbled, and whoever humbles themself will be exalted."

Jesus Blesses Little Children

15 And they were bringing young children to him, that he might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they scolded them. 16 But Jesus called out to them, and said, "Let the little children come to me! and don't stop them. Because God's Kingdom belongs to such as these. 17 Indeed, I tell you, Whoever doesn’t receive God's Kingdom like a little child, will by no means enter into it."

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

19 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments, 'Don't commit adultery,' 'Don't commit murder,' 'Don't steal,' 'Don't give false testimony,' 'Honor your father and your mother.' "

21 And he said, "I've observed all these things from my youth."

22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he told him, "You still lack one thing: sell everything that you have and give to the poor, and you'll have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."

23 But when he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very rich.

With God All Things Are Possible

24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sad, he said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter into God's Kingdom. 25 For it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter into God's Kingdom."

26 And those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?"

27 And he said, "The things which are impossible with people are possible with God."

28 Then Peter said, "See, we've left everything, and followed you."

29 And he told them, "Indeed, I tell you, There's no one who has left house, or parents, or brothers and sisters, or wife, or children, on account of God's Kingdom, 30 Who will not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life."

Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection

31 Then taking the 12 aside, he told them, "Behold, we're going up to Jerusalem, and everything that was written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 For he will be handed over to the nations, and he will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit upon. 33 And they will flog him, and put him to death; but on the third day he will rise again."

34 But they didn't understand even one of these things; and this saying was hidden from them, and they didn't know what he was talking about.

A Blind Man Receives His Sight

35 Now it happened, as he was coming near to Jericho, that a certain blind man sat beside the road begging. 36 And hearing the multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. 37 And they told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." 38 And he cried out, saying, "Jesus, Son of David, have compassion on me!"

39 And those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have compassion on me!"

40 And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 Saying, "What do you want me to do for you?"

And he said, "Lord, that I may receive my sight."

42 And Jesus told him, "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you." 43 And instantly he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave God praise.

Luke 19

Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus' House

1 And Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it, 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he was trying to see who Jesus was, but he couldn't because of the crowd, because he was of short stature. 4 So he ran on ahead, and climbed up into a mulberry tree to see him: because he was to pass that way. 5 And when he came to that place, Jesus looked up and saw him, and told him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, because today I must stay in your house." 6 And he hurried, and came down, and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all began to complain, saying, "He's gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner!"

8 Then Zacchaeus stood still, and told the Lord; "Lord, look I will now give half of my goods to the poor; and if I've taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I will now restore four times as much."

9 And Jesus told him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10 Because the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost."

The Allegory of the Minas

11 Now as they were listening to these things, he spoke another allegory, because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that God's Kingdom was going to appear very soon. 12 Therefore he said, "A certain man of noble birth went into a distant country, to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13 And having called ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and told them, 'Do business until I return.' 14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We will not have this man rule over us!'

15 Now it happened, that when he returned, having received the kingdom, that he commanded those servants to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, so that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16 Then the first came before him, saying, 'Lord, your mina has earned ten minas.' 17 And he told him, 'Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in very little, have authority over ten cities.' 18 And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your mina has earned five minas.' 19 And he said likewise to him, 'You also be over five cities.'

20 Then another came, saying, 'Lord, see, here's your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief. 21 Because I was afraid of you, because you're a tough person. You collect what you didn't deposit, and harvest what you didn't sow.' 22 And he told him, 'Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a tough person, collecting what I didn't deposit and harvesting what I didn't sow: 23 Then why didn't you put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?'

24 And he told those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten minas.' 25 And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten minas.' 26 'For I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who doesn't have, even what they have will be taken away from them. 27 But bring those enemies of mine here, who didn't want me to rule over them, and slay them before me.' "

The Triumphal Entry

28 And having said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 Now it happened, as he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 30 Saying, "Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a young donkey tied, on which no person has ever sat. Untie him and bring him here. 31 And if anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying him?' Say this to them: 'Because his Lord needs him.' "

32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the young donkey, his owners asked them, "Why are you untying the young donkey?"

34 And they said, "His Lord needs him." 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the young donkey, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as he went, many spread their clothes on the road.

37 And when he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice because of all the mighty works they had seen, 38 Saying,

"Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!' Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!"

39 But some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said to him, "Teacher, scold your disciples!"

40 And he answered and told them, "I tell you that if these were to keep silent, the stones would at once shout out."

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 And when he came near, he saw the city, and wept over it, 42 Saying, "If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things which would bring you peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build a siege mound around you, surround you and close you in on every side. 44 And they will level you to the ground, and your children within you; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you didn't know the time of your visitation."

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

45 And he went into the temple, and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in it; Telling them, "It's written, 'My house is a house of prayer'; but you have made it 'a den of thieves'!"

47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were seeking a way to destroy him, 48 But were unable to do anything; because all the people listened intently, hanging on his every word.

Luke 20

Jesus' Authority Questioned

1 Now it happened, on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple and proclaimed the Good News, the chief priests and the scribes gathering together with the elders, confronted him. 2 And spoke to him, saying, "Tell us, by what authority you do these things? Or who is he who gave you this authority?"

3 And he answered and told them, "I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from human origin?"

5 And they discussed this among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' 6 But and if we say, 'From human origin;' all the people will stone us: because they're convinced that John was a prophet." 7 So they answered, "We don't know where it was from."

8 And Jesus told them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

The Allegory of the Wicked Farmers

9 Then he began to tell the people this allegory: "A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to farmers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10 And at harvest time he sent a servant to the farmers so that they might give him some fruit from the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third: and they also wounded him, and threw him out.

13 Then the lord of the vineyard said, 'What should I do? I'll send my beloved son. Perhaps when they see him, they'll respect him.' 14 But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.' 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Therefore what will the lord of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others."

And when they heard it they said, "May this never happen!"

17 But he looked at them, and said, "What then is this that is written,

'The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner' ?

18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind them to powder."

19 And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, because they perceived that he had spoken this allegory against them, but they feared the people.

The Pharisees: Is it Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?

20 And they watched him closely, and they sent spies, who pretended to be righteous men, that they might take hold of his words, so that they might deliver him to the power and authority of the governor.

21 And they asked him, saying, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and don't show partiality, but teach the way of God in truth. 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

23 But he perceiving their craftiness, told them, "Why do you test me? 24 Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?"

And answering, they said, "Caesar's."

25 So he told them, "Then give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

26 And they could not catch him in his words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at his answer and kept silent.

The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?

27 Then some of the Sadducees, who claim there is no resurrection, approached him and asked him, 28 Saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he dies childless, that his brother should take his wife and raise up seed for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 And the second took her as a wife, and he died childless. 31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman also died. 33 So in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? Because all seven had her as a wife."

34 And Jesus answered and told them, "The sons of this age marry, and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage: 36 Neither can they die any more: because they are like the heavenly messengers; and are the sons of God, being the sons of the resurrection. 37 Now even Moses revealed that the dead are raised, in the burning bush passage, when he called the Lord, ‘The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' 38 Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, because all live before him."

39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, you have spoken well." 40 And they no longer dared to ask him anything.

Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?

41 And he said to them, "How can they say that the Anointed is the son of David? 42 Because David himself said in the Book of Psalms,

'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit down at my right hand, 43 Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'

44 Since David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?"

Beware of the scribes

45 Then while all the people were listening, he told his disciples, 46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and first seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets; 47 Who devour widows houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."

Luke 21

The Widow's Two Mites

1 And having looked up, he saw the rich tossing their gifts into the treasury. 2 And he also saw a certain poor widow tossing in two mites. 3 And he said, "Indeed, I tell you, that this poor widow has tossed in more than all of them. 4 Because all these out of their abundance have tossed in offerings to God, but she out of her poverty tossed in everything that she had to live on."

Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple

5 And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, he said, 6 "As for these things which you see, the days will come, in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be thrown down."

The signs of the times and the End of the Age

7 So they asked him, saying, "Teacher, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?"

8 And he said, "Watch out, that you may not be led astray: Because many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Therefore do not follow them! 9 But whenever you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; because these things must happen first, but the end will not come immediately."

10 Then he told them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: 11 There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines, and plagues, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all these, they will lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to assemblies, and to prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name; 13 But it will give you an opportunity to testify. 14 Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; 15 Because I will give you a mouth and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or contradict. 16 But you will be betrayed even by your parents, and brothers and sisters, and relatives, and friends; and they will cause some of you to be put to death. 17 And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. 18 But not a hair of your head will be lost. 19 By your cheerful endurance you will gain your souls.

The Destruction of Jerusalem

20 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then understand that its devastation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judah must flee to the mountains, and those inside her must leave, and those in the fields must not enter into her, 22 Because these are the days of retribution, to fulfill everything that has been written. 23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days. Because there will be great distress on the land and anger against this people, 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by the nations until the times of the nations are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 And there will be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 People will faint from fear and apprehension because of the things that are to come on the inhabited world, because the powers of heaven will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to happen, then look up, and lift up your heads; because the day of your full ransoming draws near."

The Allegory of the Fig Tree

29 And he spoke an allegory to them; "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So likewise you, when you see these things happening, know that God's Kingdom is near. 32 Indeed, I tell you, This generation will by no means pass away, until all these things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away: but my words will not pass away.

The Importance of Watching

34 But be on your guard, lest your hearts be weighed down with a hangover and drunkenness, and the worries of life, and that day come upon you unexpectedly. 35 Because like a trap it will come upon everyone who dwells on the face of the whole earth. 36 So stay alert at all times, praying always, that you may be counted worthy to escape everything that is about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man."

37 And in the daytime he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and stayed on the mountain called the Mount of Olives. 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen intently to him in the Temple.

Luke 22

The Plot to Kill Jesus

1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; because they feared the people.

3 Then Satan entered Judas, who was called Iscariot, who was numbered among the 12. 4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he could betray him to them. 5 And they were delighted, and agreed to give him money. 6 And he agreed, and began looking for an opportune time to betray him to them, apart from the multitude.

Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

7 Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came, when the Passover lamb must be sacrificed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it."

9 So they said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"

10 And he told them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a clay water jar will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you are to say to the head of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" ' 12 And he will show you a large furnished upstairs room. Make preparations there."

13 So they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus Institutes the Lord's Supper

14 And when the hour had come, he reclined to eat, and the 12 apostles with him. 15 Then he told them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 For I tell you, that I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in God's Kingdom."

17 Then he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 Because I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until God's Kingdom has come."

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me."

20 Likewise he also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the New Covenant in my blood, which is shed for you. 21 But, behold, the hand of the one betraying me is with mine on the table. 22 And indeed the Son of Man goes, just as it has been predetermined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"

23 Then they began to discuss among themselves, which of them might be the one who would do this.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness

24 And there also arose a dispute among them, as to which of them was the greatest.

25 But he told them, "The kings of the nations exercise lordship over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.' 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. 27 Because who is greater, the one who reclines at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? Yet I am among you as the one who serves.

28 You are the ones who have remained with me in my trials, 29 And I bestow a kingdom upon you, just as my Father bestowed one on me, 30 That you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel."

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

31 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Behold, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you like wheat: 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And when you have come back, you must strengthen your brothers and sisters."

33 But he told him, "Lord, I'm ready to go with you both to prison and to death."

34 But he said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today, until you have denied three times that you know me."

Supplies for the Road

35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out without a money bag, and provision bag, and sandals, did you lack anything?" And they said, "Nothing."

36 Then he told them, "But now, whoever has a money bag, let them take it, and likewise a provision bag: and whoever has no sword, let them sell their garment, and let them buy one. 37 Because I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was counted among the lawless.' Because the things written about me are being fulfilled."

38 And they said, "Lord, look, here are two swords."

And he told them, "It is enough."

The Prayer in the Garden

39 And as he was accustomed to do, he came out and went to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And having come to the place, he told them, "Pray that you may not enter into testing."

41 Then he went about a stone's throw away from them, knelt down, and prayed, 42 Saying, "Father, if you're willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but your will be done." 43 And a messenger from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he got up from prayer, he came to his disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 And said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into testing."

Betrayal and Arrest in the Garden

47 And while he was still speaking, behold, a multitude came, and the one called Judas, who was one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he drew near to Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49 When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered and said, “Let me at least do this”—and he touched his ear, and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come to him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber? 53 When I was with you daily in the temple, you didn't try to seize me. But this is your hour, and you're under the authority of darkness."

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly

54 Then they seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following from a distance. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat in their midst. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him sitting in the light and looking intently at him, said, "This man was also with him!" 57 But he denied him, saying, "Woman, I do not know him!"

58 And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"

59 Then after about one hour had passed, another firmly insisted, saying, "In truth this man was also with him, because he also is a Galilean!"

60 And Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you're talking about!"

And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered the Word of the Lord, how he had told him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." 62 And Peter went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

63 And the men who held Jesus mocked him, and beat him. 64 And when they had blindfolded him, they repeatedly struck him in the face, and repeatedly asked him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one that hit you?" 65 And they blasphemously spoke many other things against him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

66 And when it became day, the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, came together and led him into their council chamber, saying, 67 "If you are the Anointed? Tell us!"

And he told them, "If I tell you, you won't believe. 68 And also if I question you, you will by no means answer me or release me. 69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

70 So they all said, "Are you God's Son, then?"

And he told them, You have said it, because I am."

71 And they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth!"

Luke 23

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate

1 And the whole assembly of them rose up and brought him before Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man misleading the nation, and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Anointed, a king!"

3 And Pilate asked him, saying, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

And he answered him and said, "You have said it.”

4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man."

5 But they kept on insisting, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judah, beginning from Galilee even to here!"

Jesus' Stands Before Herod

6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the man was a Galilean. 7 When he knew that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; because he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him, and he was hoping to see some sign performed by him. 9 Then he questioned him with many words, but he answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod, with his men of war, having treated him with contempt, and having mocked him, threw a glistening robe around him, and sent him back to Pilate. 12 And that same day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been hostile toward each other.

Jesus' Takes the Place of Barabbas

13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14 Told them, "You have brought this man to me, on the charge of misleading the people. And indeed, when I examined him in your presence, I found no guilt in this man, concerning the matters which you bring charges against him; 15 And neither did Herod, because I sent you to him; and indeed nothing worthy of death has been done by him. 16 So I will punish him and let him go. 17 (Because he was obligated to release someone for them at the feast.)

18 But they all shouted out together, “Away with this man, and release Barabbas to us!”19 (Who had been thrown in prison because of a certain insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)

20 Pilate therefore, wanting to release Jesus, spoke to them again. 21 But they continued to shout, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

22 And he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found no guilt deserving of death in him: Therefore I will punish him and let him go."

23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified. And their voices and those of the chief priests prevailed. 24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they demanded. 25 And he released to them the one they requested, who for insurrection and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

The King on a Cross

26 And as they led him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, as he was coming in from the country, and they laid the cross on him, to carry it behind Jesus.

27 And a great multitude of people followed him, and many women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. 28 But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29 Because, behold, the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs which never gave birth, and the breasts which were never nursed.' 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us;' and to the hills, 'Cover us.' 31 Because if they do these things in the wet wood, what will be done in the dry?"

32 And two other criminals were also led away to be crucified with him. 33 And when they had come to the place, which is called "The Skull," there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, because they don't know what they are doing."

And they cast lots, dividing up his garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood, watching. And the rulers were also with them, sneering and saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Anointed, God's chosen one!"

36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 37 And saying, "If you're the king of the Jews, save yourself!"

38 And an inscription also was written over him, in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew letters:

THIS IS THE KING
OF THE JEWS

39 Then one of the criminals who had been hanged there blasphemed him, saying, "If you're the Anointed, save yourself and us!"

40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Don't you even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, because we are receiving the due reward for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." 42 And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43 And Jesus told him, "Indeed, I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise."

Jesus Dies on the Cross

44 Now it was about the sixth hour (about noon), and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in the middle. 46 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit!" And after he said these things, he breathed his last.

47 Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous man!"

48 And all the crowds which came together for this spectacle, when they saw what had happened, beat their own chests and returned. 49 And all those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Jesus Buried in Joseph's Tomb

50 And behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and righteous man 51 (this man had not consented to their decision and deed), he was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for God's Kingdom. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in a linen sheet, and laid it in a tomb that was cut out of rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 And that day was the Preparation Day; and the Day of Rest was drawing near.

55 And the women who had come with him from Galilee followed after him, and they observed the tomb and how his body was placed. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they indeed rested on the Day of Rest, according to the commandment.

Luke 24

He is Risen!

1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and some other women were with them. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 And they entered in, but they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 Now it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 And they were afraid, and bowed their faces down to the ground. Then they said to them, "Why are you seeking the living among the dead? 6 He isn't here, but he's risen! Remember what he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, 7 Saying, The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful people, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' "

8 And they remembered his words, 9 And they returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven apostles, and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 And their words seemed to them like nonsense, and they didn't believe them. 12 Then Peter got up, and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen clothes lying by themselves. Then he returned, wondering to himself what had happened.

Jesus Appears to Two of His Disciples

13 And behold, on that same day, two of them were traveling to a village named Emmaus, which was 60 stadium laps (about 7 miles) from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 Now it happened, as they talked and discussed these things, that Jesus himself came near and walked along with them; 16 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

17 And he said to them, What kind of conversation is this that you are having with one another, as you walk and look sad?"

18 And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said to him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem, who doesn't know the things which have happened there in these days?"

19 And he said to them, "What things?"

And they told him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21 But we were hoping that he was the one who was going to pay the ransom for Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover certain women of our group astonished us, after they arrived early at the tomb. 23 And not finding his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of heavenly messengers, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and they found it just as the women had said: but they didn't see him."

25 Then he told them, "How senseless and slow of heart you are to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Wasn't it necessary for the Anointed to suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?" 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them in the scriptures all the things concerning himself.

The Disciples' Eyes Opened

28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and he acted as though he was going farther. 29 But they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, because it's getting on toward evening, and the day is nearly over." And he went in to stay with them.

30 Now it happened, as he was reclining to eat with them, having taken bread, he blessed and broke it, and he gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32 And they said to one another, "Didn't our heart burn within us, while he talked with us on the road, and while he opened the scriptures?" 33 And they got up that same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the 11 apostles gathered together, and those who were with them, 34 Saying, "The Lord has indeed risen, and has appeared to Simon!" 35 And they described the things that had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 Now as they were saying these things, Jesus himself stood in their midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you." 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and thought that they had seen a spirit. 38 But he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; because a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see I have."

40 And having said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" 42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43 And taking it, he ate in their presence.

The Scriptures Opened

44 And he told them,These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."

45 Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And told them, "Thus it was written, and thus it was necessary for the Anointed to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 And that a change of heart and mind and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high."

The Ascension

50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51 Now it happened, while he was blessing them, he was separated from them, and was taken up into heaven. 52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.

Amen! (Indeed!)
